"Zuloak"

Zuloak is about the creation of a music group formed exclusively by women and the recording of all their movements. Zuloak is the result of a musical proyect born to be filmed and transformed into a documentary and have been compared to the Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground, created to be later turned into a documentary.

The rock band is named as the documentary and after suffering changes in it is nowadays formed by Tania de Sousa (main singer), Ainhoa Unzueta (guitar and second singer) and Uxue de la Fuente (drummer).

This documentary-film was directed by Fermin Muguruza, an hour and a half of sequences that show the trials and triumphs of this group that was deliberately created.

Zuloak music group and  documentary-film was presented on the worldwide known San Sebastians film festival. It was also promoted in radio, like in the interview to the group made in Euskadi Irratia (we put the audio below), where they talk about the proyect and the group itself.

Their album is basically the same as the soundtrack of the documentary. They play rock music and this is what makes this group very attractive, as nowadays, it's not very common to see  this tipe of gruops, above all basque rockbands formed only by women.
Now, they have been given the chance to do a tour through two different continents, having the oportunity to spread their music all around the world.

Here we have the audio of the interview on Euskadi Irratia and the trailer of the film. This is Zuloak:

Basque in Media

First of all, we have to take into account that Basque is a minoritarian lenguage and that this is a clear disadvantage it has to deal with day by day. Due to this, Basque language haven´t the same opportunities as other languages like English do in media.

In spite of that, Basque lenguage does have its presence in media like TV, radio and press.
In the case of the TV it has very few channels that broadcast in Basque and just one broadcasts only in Basque (ETB1).
Anyway we have to remark that this channel is direced to a very limited public. It covers the demand of the youngest and oldest public, but not the youths ones.

In the case of the radio, we met with the same problem. There are a few big radios in Basque, although a lot of small local ones. But on the other hand, we have to say that in the field of music, the young public is the leading one and the one who consumes it the most.

Finally, we must mention Basque press. Basque situation in printed press is delicated nowadays. But so it is in every languages one. In this modern era we are living in, the future of press is in a trouble. So, the work to maintain Basque press alive, the effort made by professionals that work on it is doubled. Nowadays there is only one newspaper just in Basque: Berria. But it is true too that there are others which mix Basque and Spanish language, and a lot of 'herri aldizkariak' that are in Basque.

So, although in comparison with other languages Basques apearance in media is quite limited, it is true that working hard to offer a variety of sources of information in Basque can give us as a result the improvement of a minoritarian language and the persistence of it in media.

The effect of technology in languages

Nowadays the media has a very important role in our daily lives and new technologies improve this roles. That is the reason why the spread of them and the usage of the language used are so important.

This is the case of English. The internet is maybe the most important technological invention of all times, as we use it at any time for any work and to share or find information. We are always interacting with internet and the main language that it is used on the internet is English. That is why that language is becoming more and more powerful.

This is a serious problem for minoritarian languages like Danish or Basque, that are losing native speakers just because the leguage is old fashioned and less inportant than the lingua franca (english) or other big languages like German, Spanish or French.

If we look for solutions to this small use of minoritarian languages, that on the other hand is decreasing, we would underline the modernization and continous evolve of them as a way to survey. This would mean adapting the languages to modern necesities, and what nowadays society asks for. From our point of view, media is the perfect tool for it, being at the same time conscient of the changes it will bring to the language.

Although media changes the style or punctuation, grammar stays the same, which means the lasting of a language. And this would be the best end to minoritarian languages: to last.
